Stepan Zorian wrote the historical novel "King Papa" during the difficult years of World War II, 1941-1943. To uplift national spirit, the author illuminated the most difficult and fateful historical events in the life of the young King Papa, in which, thanks to the spirit and patriotism of Armenians, the country is liberated from the yoke of the enemy.

Stepan Zorian began work on the novel in the late 1930s. He collected materials, outlined the novel's structure and individual plot lines, and wrote a draft. In one section of his "Autobiographical Notes" (1957), he writes: "...I stopped to translate 'King Papa' about ten times... And what I started in thirty-eight, I finished in forty-two."
